Marti bracelet
The start of spring in Greece...starts with a special tradition, namely Marti (in Greek: Ο Μάρτης). On March 1, it is tradition for Greek mothers to make bracelets for their children. This bracelet is called "Marti", which means March. They are made of red and white thread and are tied around the wrist. The superstition is that the Greeks wear these Marti bracelets so that the sun of early spring cannot burn their skin. The bracelet is red and white, the symbol of red cheeks and white complexion. The bracelets are worn from March 1 to March 31 and are worn out by the time of the Greek Orthodox Easter midnight mass. They are also used as decoration in trees and shrubs and plants. When the traditional bonfires are lit, the bracelets are removed and thrown into the fire.
